Thomas has become a prominent advocate for diversity and inclusion, particularly within the world of football. After coming out as gay in 2014, he became one of the first high-profile players to do so. He does not allow himself to be defined by this, using his platform and unique experiences to challenge the stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ issues in sport. He has since worked tirelessly to promote equality and combat discrimination, becoming an ambassador for the DFB (German Football Association) on matters of diversity. His efforts extend beyond personal advocacy; he supports initiatives aimed at creating more inclusive environments for players of all backgrounds.

Julius Hirsch Honorary Award (2011)
Awarded to people, initiatives and clubs that campaign against anti-Semitism, discrimination and racism.

Federal Republic of Germany (2020)
A prestigious award, and in Thomas’ case, awarded in recognition of significant efforts in promoting equality and fighting discrimination.
DJK Ethics Award (2015)
The award honours individuals who demonstrate outstanding personal integrity, contribute to the promotion of fair play, and uphold high ethical standards in sport.
